Title Development Process
The editorial process consists of three main stages: acquisition, development, and production. Acquisition involves the developmet of book ideas, recruiting authors, and developing the book content. As first level AEs do not work with DEs, they do all the acquisition work on all chapters until the handed them over for technical editing and other production work.
Second level and more senior AEs work with DEs. In this case, the AE does most but not all of the work involved in the acquisition process, as the rest is done by the DE. When the AE has accepted the first 3-4 first drafts of the book and made sure that the author is delivering content that meets the agreed book specification and Packt quality standards, they hand over the title to the DE. This is a summary of the DEing tasks:
• The DE reviews every first draft the author submits and gives them feedback. If the quality is not acceptable, the DE sends the chapter back to the author for rewrite.
• The DE recruits technical reviewers to review the content of the book.
• Chapter drafts that are accepted by the DE are sent to at least one external reviewer for expert feedback.
• When the technical reviews of a chapter are received, the DE checks them, incorporates his/her own comments, and sends the chapter back to the Author to act on the comments and finalize the chapter.
• When the final draft of the chapter is received, the DE checks it to make sure that it addressed all comments. If not, it is sent back to the Author.
• When the first one or two final drafts are accepted, the book enters production to prepare it for publication. The book is first edited by Technical Editors, then copy edited, indexed, laid out, proofread, and finally printed and published.
• During the production process, and in particular the TEing stage, the DE might be needed to answer some queries by the TE.
• A Project Coordinator (PC) works with the DE, author, and reviewers to manage the timeline of the book to ensure that deadlines are met.
• The DE writes the Title Information Sheet (TIS) of every book they work on. The TIS is the source of marketing information for the book.
Required Skills
While full training will be provided to successful candidates, the following are required skills:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent command of English.
• Ability to learn technologies fast.
• Effective Time management and ability to work to deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and self-manage with minimal supervision.
• Multi-tasking. The AE works on multiple projects at a time, with different titles being in different stages of development.
• Excellent ability to work in a team.
• Three months editorial experience.
Responsibilities and Duties
• Review book content.
• Work with authors to ensure that they write the good quality content that meets the requirements of the book specification.
• Recruit reviewers.
• Manage relationships with authors, reviewers, and other contacts.
• Work with the AEs, PM, PCs, and TE to ensure that books are published on time.
• Write book TISs and provide the marketing and sales teams with information that helps them market and sell the book effectively.
• Produce regular reports that compare the plan targets against actuals, and identify problems and actions.
• Meet the set productivity and quality targets.
• Meet book deadlines.
• Develop a good understanding of technologies and their book markets
• Play an active role in developing Packt’s publishing strategy
• Contribute to the team’s pool of book ideas.
• Contribute to the discussion of title proposals by AEs.
Intrested candidates can mail in their CV’s or call on Tel: 022-40358108
